Spiritual Laws Rule

The natural world in which we live is ruled by physical laws. Thank God! If it wasn’t, we wouldn’t know day to day if the sun would shine, gravity would work, the atom would stay intact, and innumerable other things we just take for granted. But did you know there are also spiritual laws? In fact, spiritual laws created and supersede physical laws. When physical laws are suspended by spiritual laws, we call that a miracle.

The Apostle Paul makes reference to a spiritual law in in one of his letters: “For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death” (Romans 8:2). In-other-words, what Jesus accomplished on the cross for us supersedes Adam’s failure in the garden.

God’s word reveals to us what these spiritual laws are and how to use them. The book of Proverbs is a great example. It describes what happens when we go this way or that way and the outcome we can expect. Up front a path may seem fine, a pleasant or fun way to go, but the end of it can bring destruction and heartache.

Take this as an example: “The lazy man will not plow because of winter; He will beg during harvest and have nothing” (Proverbs 20:4). It’s a caution against being lazy and not attending to life’s business. Sounds simple, right? Everyday business isn’t just going to the job and coming home to watch TV or play video games. There are many other things that need to be done to run a home. Being lax will eventually catch up. A messy house causes stress and strife, a checkbook that isn’t kept will cause a real financial mess, house and yard neglect invites undesirable creatures to make their home with yours.

If we read Mark chapter four, we find that the Kingdom of God operates in like manner as seedtime and harvest. Jesus is telling us that there is a spiritual law that is like the physical law of seedtime and harvest.

The tripod that makes up the firm foundation for living — wisdom, knowledge, and understanding — must be founded on faith in God’s word. Things of this life will come and go, but the Word of God is eternal. God’s Word is the foundation of spiritual and physical laws.

Stay strong and prepared!
